A Different Orlando: Exploring its Historic Districts

March 2022

Beyond the Magic, Discovering Historic Orlando

We spent a lovely day in Orlando without the theme parks. We visited the parks multiple days in August 2007 with our sons and hadn’t explored Orlando’s historical highlights. We parked in the city’s first historic district, the Downtown Historic District. With this designation, 8 square blocks, with about 80 buildings from the 1880s until the early 1940s, were saved from demolition.

From here, we walked to Lake Eola Park, a well-maintained park in the heart of Orlando. The lake offers gorgeous views of Orlando’s modern skyline! By the way, the lake is a giant sinkhole!

.

We also visited another historic district, Lake Eola Heights, one of Orlando’s oldest and most architecturally diverse neighborhoods.

We walked back through Orlando’s Central Business District and discovered its gem, St. James Catholic Cathedral! After lighting a candle, we returned to the parking garage.
