A Visit to Nevada’s 1870 Capitol Building

Exploring Nevada’s Historic Capitol

During our walk on the Kit Carson Trail, we also stopped to check out Nevada’s State Capitol. It is an impressive building, designed in the Neoclassical style, complete with a striking dome and a symmetrical façade, although the front was somewhat hidden behind the trees in the surrounding park.

Construction began on April 21, 1870, and finished just a year later using sandstone quarried by unpaid inmate labor at the nearby Nevada State Prison. Today, the historic landmark stands as the second-oldest state capitol west of the Mississippi River, and it remains an active seat of state government.
