A Winter Weekend in Friesland
Catching Up in the Far North
This year, we enjoyed our annual trip with friends again. We headed north and arrived at our charming cottage in Waadhoeke late Friday afternoon, right on the dike, just above Tzummarum in Friesland. After soaking in the wide views of the Wadden Sea from the dike, we relaxed by the cozy fireplace and caught up on each other’s lives.

The next day, after a filling breakfast, we took a short walk along the dike under the clear winter sky. Later, the men headed out for a round of golf while the women drove to Franeker for a stroll and a nice lunch. I was familiar with Franeker since I’d visited the famous Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium there before. Walking through the center of this centuries-old Frisian “Eleven Cities” town with its beautiful old houses, some leaning like the Korendragershuisje, never gets old.

Missing the Aurora, Catching the Memories
We all met up again that afternoon for an evening full of great food, drinks, and conversation. As usual, time flew by too quickly. After a good night’s sleep, we said our goodbyes just before eleven on Sunday morning. It had been a wonderful weekend, even though we missed the Northern Lights because of the clouds.
