Lake Oswego, along the Willamette River

The Legacy of Mary S. Young State Park

Mary S. Young Park began as a generous gift in the early 1970s, when Mary and Thomas Young donated their land to the state to keep it open to the public and prevent residential development. It officially opened in 1973, covering 128 acres along the Willamette River. The park has a distinct Pacific Northwest feel, characterized by towering Douglas firs and bigleaf maples.
After learning about the park’s generous origins and Pacific Northwest charm, we walked a portion of its five miles of winding forest trails. Even though the park is tucked away in suburban West Linn, it felt surprisingly wild with its steep ascents and descents. The view near the river was mesmerizing as well.
