Biscayne National Park & Homestead Bayfront Park
February 2022
Today reminded us that we must prepare and plan when visiting a National Park. At the visitor center of Biscayne National Park, we learned that the park’s sole hiking trail was closed. We also hadn’t realized that Biscayne National Park is primarily a water park, with 95% of its area submerged, and that it is best seen by activities like kayaking, snorkeling, or boat excursions. Since we didn’t have time to do any of the suggested activities, we left for the nearby Homestead Bayfront Park.
We followed a 1.0-mile trail at Homestead Bayfront Park and enjoyed beautiful views of Biscayne Bay National Park. This park has a nice natural feature: an atoll, a ring-shaped island. The animals we encountered were shy and quick, but I captured some lovely photographs. Despite multiple alligator warning signs, I thankfully didn’t encounter any.
The Bayfront Park restaurant was open and not crowded at all. We had an outdoor lunch, enjoying the ocean views, swinging palm trees, and the refreshing breeze. It felt like summer, a rare and welcome treat, especially in February!
