Snee Farm and the Story of Charles Pinckney
The Charles Pinckney National Historic Site tells the story of South Carolina’s Charles Pinckney, a statesman who played a role in shaping the U.S. Constitution. As a representative of South Carolina, he was also one of the signers of the document.
The site preserves part of the grounds of Snee Farm, one of Pinckney’s plantations, which served as a rice and indigo plantation. Hurricanes or other natural disasters have destroyed the original buildings. However, the site still offers a glimpse into the plantation’s historic landscape, featuring gardens and live oak trees.

The museum, housed in a later-built 1828 Lowcountry cottage, tells the story of Pinckney, his family, and the lives of those who lived and worked on the plantation through exhibits and artifacts.

Charles Pinckney was a controversial figure among the Founding Fathers. His claim that much of the Constitution was based on his lost draft, the Pinckney Plan, is still a subject of debate. A dark stain on his legacy is that he supported slavery. Due to his role, slavery was protected within the Constitution. He also changed political parties, which could mean he was opportunistic, given his reputation for ambition and vanity, or that he had simply changed his political beliefs.
