Cuyahoga Valley National Park - Day 1
All Aboard! Discovering Cuyahoga Valley by Rail
Our first impression of Cuyahoga Valley National Park was a unique experience, different from our visits to other National Parks. Instead of driving or hiking through a National Park, we boarded the magnificent Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train for a 3.5-hour round-trip through the park.

And a Walk on the Tow Path
We also walked a few miles on the Towpath Trail, which follows the Ohio & Erie Canal, a 19th-century engineering wonder. Operational from 1827 to 1913, the Canal played a crucial role in the region’s development. Cleveland changed into a significant port with boats carrying timber and farm products to Lake Erie and returning with manufactured goods and specialty foods.
The Ohio & Erie Canal had 44 locks to bridge the 395-foot elevation difference between Cleveland and Akron. Mules pulled cargo boats, often loaded with 60 tons or more of freight, along the towpath.
The Canal was decommissioned due to a destructive flood in 1913 that caused damage too expensive to repair. Additionally, new transportation systems, such as railroads and automobiles, became economically more efficient and viable. In 1996, the Ohio & Erie Canal was designated a National Heritage Area, preserving its legacy for future generations.
