Strolling Through Deventer

Deventer's Historic Weighing House Museum

We had some spare time before check-in at the B&B Matanzas. We strolled around and decided to explore Museum De Waag at the medieval Brink Square. The location of this museum is noteworthy. It’s housed in the Netherlands’ oldest (former) weighing house. The Brink is a large, rectangular square dating back to the 11th century, surrounded by other historic buildings. The Brink has been a vital center of Deventer’s commercial and social life for centuries and remains so today.
While De Waag dates from 1528, the museum was founded in 1915. Its collection includes artifacts from Deventer’s history, such as paintings, sculptures, and objects from the city’s past. We enjoyed the collection, which brought back memories. I still remember the delicious ‘Deventer Koek,’ the recipe for which dates from 1417. I also learned that the art forger Han van Meegeren was from Deventer. He became infamous for his fake Vermeer paintings. He is perhaps best known for having sold his fake paintings to Hermann Göring, a high-ranking Nazi official.

Catching Up at De 7e Hemel

In the evening, we made our way back for dinner. We took the scenic ferry to the charming restaurant De 7e Hemel downtown. We had a lovely evening filled with delicious food and a perfect opportunity to catch up on everything that had happened in our lives over the past year.

Deventer's Dickens Doll

After a delicious breakfast and checking out, we made one last visit to Deventer. We strolled through the historic Noordenbergkwartier and the Binnenstad, soaking up the beautiful medieval atmosphere. We then noticed a woman seemingly trying to escape by climbing out of a window. Intrigued, we learned that the building was indeed a former prison, operating from 1800 to 1905. The ‘escapee’ turned out to be a doll, part of the fascinating Charles Dickens Cabinet housed within the old prison walls.
