Visiting Downtown Tallahassee
January & February 2022
A Cold Day at Florida's Capitol
We visited the Florida Capitol complex in Tallahassee. This time, we walked around the complex quickly and did not stroll very long. The cold weather and wind made it very uncomfortable outside, even though I was bundled up in several layers of clothing, including my thick winter coat.
The Florida State Capitol is a majestic building within a large complex. The blue winter sky offered a stunning setting for photographs; however, the nearby skyscraper took away from the Capitol’s beauty. What a missed opportunity to maintain the complex’s historic architectural harmony.
Living History at San Luis de Talimali
During our travels in the USA, we have seen quite a few missions. When we heard about Mission San Luis de Apalachee (also known as San Luis de Talimali), we wanted to visit it.
From 1633 to 1704, Apalachee Indians and newcomers from Spain lived together here. We walked around, entering the reconstructed church, the governor’s residence, and the communal house, all with artifacts from a gone-by era.
The mission’s history was also brought to life by skilled actors dressed in period costumes. Their detailed information and fascinating stories made our visit even more memorable.
