The Vaccine Road Trip
May 2021
From Outlaws to Antibodies
Four weeks ago, we were staying at an Airbnb in Sterling, UT, when we learned we could get our first shot in Manti in just two days. We signed up right away and promised ourselves we would return for the second shot, no matter where we were. We ended up in Kanab, UT, which was a long drive away. Still, we were so eager for that second shot that we made the 400-mile round trip without hesitation.

.
We followed the same route on our way back. Without our pet this time, we were able to stop at the Butch Cassidy Childhood Home, which sits just off the highway. The house is a small two-room cabin made from hand-cut logs and mud. The Parker family raised Robert LeRoy Parker and his 12 siblings there. As a young man, Robert became involved in outlaw activities and eventually fled his home to avoid legal consequences. Today, he’s better known as the famous train and bank robber, Butch Cassidy.
We got to Manti just before 1:00 PM. We ate lunch in the garden with the Manti Temple in the background. This time, in the clear sun, the temple looked even more beautiful than the last time we visited, when it was windy, cloudy, and freezing. About half an hour later, we had gone through the drive-thru, gotten our shots, picked up our vaccine cards and stickers, and were back on the long road home, relieved to finally be protected against the virus.
