From Defense to Delight, Fort Everdingen and Het Spoel

A Spring Walk Through Dutch History

It was a beautiful spring day, so my friend and I decided to visit some lovely nearby spots: Fort Everdingen and Het Spoel. The first thing that caught our eye was the lush, flowering floodplains along the Lek River.

Fort Everdingen

The fort is a historically significant, yet beautiful, place. As we walked here, we realized we were on a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 19th century, this fort was part of the famous New Dutch Waterline. Its purpose was to defend the country by flooding the area to stop advancing troops, with the fort itself serving to hold back the enemy at the river.

Werk aan Het Spoel

From the fort, we walked over to the nearby Werk aan het Spoel. This defensive work had a particular task: to protect the large inlet sluice in the Lek dike, which allowed them to flood the polder.

Fortunately, these historical locations have been given a much more enjoyable purpose today. Fort Everdingen is now home to a craft brewery, while Werk aan het Spoel has become a cultural meeting place where nature and history come together.

All in all, it was another enjoyable walk that proved we don’t have to travel far to find something truly special.
