Our Cottage on The Waterfront

After a smooth, though long drive, we were back at the Great Lakes, this time on the south side of Lake Ontario in Lyndonville, NY. For a week, we stayed in a cozy little waterfront cottage, the kind of place that instantly made me feel at ease.

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes, but standing on its shore, with only an endless horizon, it still felt endless. It is also the last of the five lakes; its water flows eventually into the Atlantic Ocean.

Over the days, we saw the lake’s many moods, sometimes calm and glassy, sometimes rough and dangerous, all depending on the weather. And then there were the sunsets, unforgettable on a rainy evening when the sky just broke open in time, so through a clear spot in the clouds the sun turned the sky into a dramatic red.

Running and Walking Through Amish Country

There weren’t any dedicated running or hiking trails nearby, but I was able to get some miles in with two runs and one longer walk along the main road.

Traffic was light, so I never felt uneasy. From time to time, we saw a horse and buggy pass by, a familiar sight in this part of New York, with Amish and Mennonite farms spread out across the surrounding countryside. The absence of loose dogs also made it easy to use the road as a running track. I was also grateful that there were no loose dogs to worry about, just a few little barkers in the distance, all safely behind fences.

I brought my camera along on my walk on the day of departure to capture the quiet, rural character of the area. I paused several times to take pictures, which took longer than I expected. When I finally got back, my husband was already waiting. After a quick bathroom break, I gathered my last things, tucked Hemmes into his carrier, and stepped into the car. Before I knew it, we were on our way to the next stop of our trip, to Independence, OH.
