The Utrecht Archives, Discovering Utrecht’s Stored Memory

A Day in Utrecht

Our yearly meet-up started with coffee at home before we headed out for a scenic walk toward downtown Utrecht. Along the way, we stopped for lunch at De Pomp. This former gas station, which was transformed into a restaurant, still features relics of its past life served delicious food. Afterward, we wandered further into the historic center and popped into the Het Utrechts Archief expo. It was an easy decision to make this cultural stop without admission fees, thanks to our Museumkaarten (MJK).

Outside The Utrecht Archives

Het Utrechts Archief is stationed in a neoclassical building which, by itself, is a piece of Utrecht’s history. It sits on the foundations of the Paulusabdij, a medieval abbey that dates back to 1050. Original structural elements are still present today. The abbey was converted into the Palace of Justice centuries later and served as the city’s courthouse from the 16th century until 2000.

Inside The Utrecht Archives

The museum section of Het Utrechts Archief was interactive, engaging, and had amazing wall drawings of Utrecht in development. We were greeted by a lively 3D animation where historical figures, like the 16th-century heroine Trijn van Leemput, writer Belle van Zuylen, and the city’s first archivist Samuel Muller, came out of the archive books to share Utrecht’s past. Another highlight was stepping into a replica of a horse-drawn carriage. With moving panels and rattling sounds, it mimicked a bumpy ride through 18th-century cobblestone streets. We ended our visit with a virtual tour showing the evolution of Utrecht’s streets. This tour offered a surreal moment of familiarity, considering I have cycled many of those streets so often myself.

After our visit, we walked to the bus station, caught the bus home, and said our goodbyes after spending another wonderful day together.
