A Short But Tough Stretch on the Appalachian NST

On this beautiful day, we hiked a short section of the Appalachian Trail. We began at the Allen Gap trailhead and followed the ridge through the Cherokee National Forest, right on the Tennessee-North Carolina border. The scenery was beautiful, but the steep hills made the hike tough. It took us longer than we thought, so we turned around at the 2.5-mile mark to avoid being out at dusk when wildlife is more active.

On the trail, we met two hikers carrying big packs who had started six weeks ago and planned to walk the entire 2,190 miles in one trip! While that sounded exciting, we’ll stick to hiking only shorter sections of this interesting trail.
