Hunting Island's Unexpected Charm
March 2022
Jungle, Beach, and Storm At Hunting Island
We had seen the sign “Hunting Island State Park” driving to Fripp Island. Our itinerary for the area did not include a visit to this park, just as something to do on a rainy day. So, with the weather forecast predicting rain, we went for a visit, and in hindsight, we were so pleased we did.
Hunting Island is a barrier Island and South Carolina’s most popular state park. The island is one of the few remaining undeveloped Sea Islands in the Lowcountry. Following the trail, we saw a dense jungle with tall trees, a boneyard beach with dead trees sculpted by nature, white beaches, and a historic lighthouse! Due to the dramatic dark sky tones of the approaching thunderstorm, the park’s wild character was even more noticeable.
