Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo,
Junípero Serra's Complex Legacy

A Glimpse into California's Past, The Carmel Mission

Located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo is better known as the Carmel Mission. The Mission was founded in 1770 by Spanish Franciscan friar Junípero Serra. It was the second of the 21 Spanish missions in California.

.

This Mission has been renovated since 1931. It was in ruins by 1850, 17 years after the Mexican government secularized it. The result is impressive, with well-restored buildings and beautiful gardens that faithfully replicate the original architecture and designs.

From the Carmel Mission, Junípero Serra, “Father of the California Missions,” directed the construction of seven additional missions until he passed away in 1784. He was buried beneath the sanctuary floor, his grave marked by a simple stone bearing his name.

Junípero Serra was canonized in 2015, although many Native Americans protested against it. For Catholics, he was a great evangelizer; for Native Americans, he was part of the oppressive Spanish conquistadors.
