Our Stay in Carson City, NV
September 2023
A Nevada Detour to Carson City, NV
After leaving Grizzly Flats, CA, we made a quick detour across the state line to Carson City, the capital of Nevada. We had already caught a glimpse of the area during our drive to Lake Tahoe, which sits just 20 miles away. While it would have made sense to stay here for Lake Tahoe visits, finding an affordable, pet-friendly Airbnb for us and our cat, Hemmes, had proven impossible.
Still, we wanted to explore this corner of Nevada a bit, so we had booked a two-day stay here at the Days Inn, a hotel that was completely fine with a feline travel guest. Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, but we avoided the summer heat in the cool lobby before settling in.
Once unpacked, we headed downtown to stretch our legs. Using the city’s map from the front desk, we followed the Kit Carson Trail, a walking route through the city’s historic district, and did a loop around the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol.

Stepping into Carson City's History
Strolling along the Kit Carson Trail, a 2.5-mile self-guided loop through Carson City’s West Side Historic District, we were surrounded by Victorian mansions and historic landmarks. Named after the famed frontier scout, the trail features roughly 48 stops celebrating the town’s late 19th-century Comstock Lode silver and gold boom. Although we didn’t read every historical plaque along the way, the walk gave a beautiful glimpse into Carson City’s rich history.
