Our Stay in Ellsworth, ME

May 2025

A Rainy Road Trip to Maine

A rainy day driving to our new destination. We took a detour, avoiding traffic through Boston, MA. We had been stuck in traffic a few days earlier and instead wanted to drive longer than be stuck again.
It started raining the moment we closed the door in Plymouth, MA, continued during the drive, and only stopped after we arrived 6.5 hours later in Ellsworth, ME, where we planned to spend a week exploring the area.

Running the Down East Sunrise Trail

I found another perfect running trail close to our Airbnb, the Down East Sunrise Trail. This corridor is an 87-mile multi-use trail between Ellsworth and Ayers Junction. Before it was a trail, it was a railway. One of its well-known users was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
I am always excited to find these converted rails because they are usually well-maintained, and they ascend or descend gently, so they are never too steep for a run. I enjoyed my three Ellsworth’s runs here, also because the weather, sunny but cool, was fabulous.

A Chilly Stroll Downtown Lancaster

After nearly a week in Lancaster, we finally dedicated our last day to exploring its downtown historic district. Bundled against the chill, we wandered its charming streets and unexpectedly discovered a statue of General William Tecumseh Sherman. The namesake of the M4 Sherman tank was born right here!

Checking Out

Our week had flown by. We had a welcoming stay in a fantastic Airbnb in downtown Lancaster, Ohio. It was the perfect place we loved returning to after exploring the area. We checked out just after 9 am, one hour earlier than required, as we had a long drive ahead to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
