Hotel Over House, A Five-Day Enfield Stop

Thanks to our late departure from Meredith, NH, we were able to check in right away at our hotel in Enfield, CT. We skipped Airbnb this time, booking a comfortable room for five quiet days before the next leg of our trip. We were all settled in within an hour.

Even though I hadn’t gone out for a run or walk, I just wanted to unwind with a cup of tea and take it easy for the rest of the day. After such a busy week in New Hampshire and driving through Vermont and Massachusetts, I told myself, “Tomorrow will be another day to be active again.

A Running Surprise at Windsor Locks Canal Trail

A day after arriving in Enfield, CT, we checked out the Windsor Locks Canal Trail State Park Trail just across the Connecticut River from the hotel where we are staying. The path was just what I needed: a paved towpath along an old canal with a totally flat grade, perfect for a nice run. I still had to mind my steps, though, since the surface was uneven in some spots.

Today’s goal was a 50-minute workout! It felt easy when I started at a gentle pace. The steep climbs of the last few weeks must have made my legs stronger than I thought; I unintentionally broke my 5K personal best!

Extra Days on the Towpath

After my initial run, I returned to the Windsor Locks Canal Trail on three additional days, for two shorter, slower runs and one hike, taking pictures. Frankly, it was hard to say goodbye to this wonderful area; the views in this state park were impossible to get tired of.

Scouting the Sales

While staying in Enfield, I also took the chance to do some shopping, as several of my favorite stores were conveniently located within a short walking distance from the hotel. I ended up limiting myself to only window shopping, although I did see some nice items. I decided to wait for the extra Black Friday discounts I love, since I didn’t actually need anything right away. My afternoons were still well-spent, though; I at least learned which stores I want to return to for the items I want.

A Relaxed Departure to Poughkeepsie, NY

We were up early, and after our run, we still had about 2.5 hours to pack everything at a relaxed pace. Precisely at noon, I turned in the room keys, and we were back on the road, driving to the Hudson Valley, to Poughkeepsie, NY.
