San Buenaventura Mission

The San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura's Timeless Treasure

The oldest building in Ventura, CA, is San Buenaventura Mission, a historic Spanish mission founded in 1782. It is one of the 21 California missions the Spanish built in Alta California, along the El Camino Real from San Diego to Sonoma.
The architecture, with its red roofs and white walls, along with the cool temperature inside the quiet buildings, the Catholic artifacts, and the shade of the mission’s gardens, all felt as though they belonged to a different place and era. It was as if we had been teleported to a medieval city in Mediterranean Europe. The mission, in particular, reminded me of Saint Francis’ town in Assisi, Italy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this visit to San Buenaventura Mission. It is also remarkable that almost 250 years later, the mission is still a place for people to gather and connect with their faith.
