Cabrillo National Monument & Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Strolling Around @ Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument is fantastic for several reasons. This southern end of the Point Loma Peninsula offers breathtaking views of San Diego, the bay, and the Pacific. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson sailing to the Naval Base made the scenery even more special. The monument commemorates the historical importance of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer who navigated and charted the Pacific’s West Coast and the first European who landed in “Alta California” in September 1542.
More history can be seen in the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse, built around 1855, which is now a museum with a huge Fresnel lens and a beautiful spiral staircase.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Although we did not see Sunset Cliffs Natural Park at sunset, we did stroll through the park and enjoy the sandstone cliffs. The views here are also stunning.
