Going Back in Time at Naper Settlement Museum

March 2008

A Day of History and Goodbyes

Our visit to Naper Settlement, located near downtown Naperville, felt as if we were stepping into a time machine. As we walked with our visitors through the outdoor museum complex, we saw historic buildings and met “villagers” who brought the past to life. The blacksmith’s forge, the old-fashioned schoolhouse, and the little chapel reminded me of the Ingalls family from Little House on the Prairie, a show I watched years ago on Dutch television.
We also attended the Naper Days festival, a celebration of the community in Naperville. Although we did not participate in every event, our youngest enjoyed the thrill of climbing as high as he could on the wall. The day ended on a somber note, though, as we bid farewell to our visitors, who were flying back to Amsterdam after a two-week stay. We missed them the moment they drove off.
