Pieter Path
From Gramsbergen to Ommen
We stayed the night in the B&B Stadslodge de Meiboom in the center of Gramsbergen with an industrial-looking B&B in a former bakery. The friendly owner brought a wicker basket with breakfast to our room at half-past seven, precisely at the agreed time. Again, we were pleasantly surprised with freshly baked bread and freshly squeezed juice for breakfast; such a great way to start the 3rd day of the Pieter path.
We were on our way just after 8 am! We walked the valley of the Vecht river. After 100 years, some of the Vecht river’s restored bends gave the river room back to safely overflood while protecting towns like Hardbergen and Ommen. Wildflowers and wildlife flourish in these areas. Near Ommen, we walked through a completely different landscape. Not the forests we see today, but the dust dunes are part of the original landscape of the Vecht valley.
I was ready to hang my hiking shoes on the willows (meaning to stop hiking) near Ommen after walking 19.26 miles, our longest distance. A remnant of a hiker with obviously the same feeling was clearly visible on the trail 🙂
