The Captivating Charm of Weir Farm
Even though it was a rainy day, we visited Weir Farm, Wilton, CT, one of Connecticut’s two National Historic Sites. The visitor center wasn’t open, but luckily, there were brochures from the National Park Service with information and maps for walks on the park’s grounds.
Interestingly, Weir Farm is the only National Park specifically set aside for painting. The side protects the home and studio of Julian Alden Weir, an American Impressionist painter. He used Weir Farm as his summer home from 1882 to 1919. It’s a quiet farmhouse with beautifully renovated studios to look just as they did when Weir created some of his most famous paintings.
We walked on the path to the pond and stepped into one of the scenes portrayed in Weir’s paintings. It’s easy to understand why he, as an artist, loved this place – it was quiet, inspiring, and captivating, even 140 years later on a rainy day.
