A Late Afternoon at the Washington State Capitol
After a day exploring the wilderness of Olympic National Park, we still made a quick detour to stop by the Washington State Capitol grounds in Olympia. Before the evening settled in, we took our usual walk around the complex. The Capitol is situated high on a bluff, overlooking Capitol Lake, Budd Inlet, and part of Puget Sound. In the distance, we could see the silhouettes of Olympic National Park mountains on the horizon, located just across the water.
The Capitol building holds the title of having the tallest self-supporting masonry dome in North America (and the fifth tallest in the world). The building was constructed in the 1920s in the grand American Neoclassical style using sandstone from local Wilkeson quarries. The whole campus was certainly impressive. We realized we definitely need to plan a longer return trip to see the inside of the building and explore more of Olympia itself! However, we still had almost two hours to drive, so we quickly wrapped up our short visit.
