The Catskill Mountains in Stamford, NY

October 2025

A Crisp Morning on Bald Mountain

On this crisp autumn morning, we climbed Bald Mountain near Stamford, NY. Although the trail is short, it features a steep ascent that makes it quite a workout. The effort was well worth it; from the open summit, the views stretched for miles across the Catskills,  painting its hills in reds, oranges, golds, and greens on this clear October day

Also, at the top, we came across old buildings and the remains of a ski lift. From the 1960s through the late 1990s, Bald Mountain was home to the Deer Run Ski Area, a beloved gathering spot for locals.

The scenery left a bittersweet feeling. The lifts stand weathered and still. Yet these quiet reminders of a bygone era, in their decay, have become artworks set within a beautiful landscape, overlooking the valley.

A Farewell Hike up Mount Utsayantha

As a farewell to the area, we hiked up Mount Utsayantha, the mountain we could see from our Airbnb. While tackling the mountain’s steep incline, walking along a gravel road, the road workers mentioned that we could drive to the top. All in good spirits, we replied, “Nah, hiking is part of the fun.” Their response: “Well, if that’s fun for you.” We laughed and reacted, “Well, the small things in life!” We wished each other a pleasant day and continued. Moments later, a truck passed, the window opened, and we got the same comment again. Haha, we are apparently weird ducks, voluntarily walking up a steep mountain!
The hike was totally worth it. At 3,214 feet, the summit rewarded us with views of Stamford, the Valley, and the Catskills. Feeling small in the best possible way, we stood there silently on top of the world, taking in the fantastic views.
