Clearwater Dam and Black River Nature Trail

We couldn’t have asked for a better day to soak up the views of majestic Clearwater Lake and hike the Black River Nature Trail. The Clearwater Dam on the Black River created the lake in 1948 for flood control and recreation. The dam released significant water, creating a powerful water flow into the Black River—a fantastic sight!
The Black River Nature Trail provided a shady path through the fresh greenery alongside the river. This part of Missouri truly lives up to its reputation for natural beauty!

Back to the Black River

We were looking for a way to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air without a long drive. So, three days after our first visit, we headed back to the Black River around lunchtime. This time, we went to the other side of the river to walk the Hike and Bike Trail System.

We walked through a beautiful mix of hardwoods and pines, enjoying views of the widened, calm river. We followed the path along the river, eventually reaching the Clearwater Dam and spillway, which marked our turning point.
