SP11 Day Trip D - Voorster Klei

At 8:45 am, we walked back to the station to catch the train to Voorst Empe station. Less than half an hour later, we followed the familiar yellow-red markings of the SP11 Day Trip D – Voorster Klei hike. Winter seemed to have put the weeping willows and hedges to rest. The light was pleasant, creating muted, soft colors.

We walked on the levees and were rewarded with stunning views. A new higher levee has been placed more inland; the old levee has been partly dug up and lowered, giving the IJssel river its much-needed space. These newly created floodplains are now nature reserves. In the distance, we saw the ruins of Nijenbeek Castle. A bit further down the route, we spotted and heard twittering geese in the nature reserve Rammelwaard, a popular bird resting area.

.

We approached the IJssel river, and the characteristic churches of Zutphen appeared in the distance on the other side of the IJssel. For the last kilometer, we walked the same route, this time in the opposite direction. We were back at the station just in time to catch the train back home after three enjoyable hiking days in and around the Zutphen area.
