We explored our third Presidential Library, the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas. Here, George W. Bush’s decisions and events are thoroughly displayed, showcasing crucial decisions and historic moments like the 9/11 attack. During his presidency, President George W. Bush and his wife led the nation with values of freedom, opportunity, accountability, and compassion.
One highlight of our visit was the insightful exhibit ‘Freedom Matters.’ As I walked through the exhibition, I was struck by its thought-provoking nature. It made me realize that I’ve often taken my democratic way of living and its liberties, such as the freedom to speak my mind, for granted. However, after watching videos of citizens from autocratic countries who never had that luxury, I realized democracy is fragile.
Democracies' Fragility
A democracy can be taken away in the blink of an eye and become a dictatorship! In the last two years, nine countries have become pure dictatorships, shifting the balance so that today, there are more dictatorships than democracies worldwide. This is a very sobering thought.
