Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park

A Hike at Point Cabrillo Light Station

Our California adventure took us to Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park, just south of Caspar, between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We hiked along a portion of the coastal trail, crossing a waving grassland and a vibrant coastal prairie before reaching the historic light station.

Built between 1908 and 1909, the carefully restored light station is one of the most complete light stations in the United States. This engineering marvel still serves a navigational role, guiding ships safely along the rugged California coastline.

Beyond its practical purpose, the station offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. One of the former lightkeepers’ houses was transformed into a captivating museum. Inside, we found ourselves surrounded by furniture and everyday items dating back to the station’s construction. The exhibit proved not only informative but also surprisingly relatable. Many displayed objects—from kitchenware to tools—resembled items used by our grandparents in their household.
