Continuing Our Travels: From Harlingen to Corpus Christi

A Touch of Holland in Harlingen & The Plains

Before we left Harlingen, TX, we took a short farewell walk through the neighborhood, following a waterway. The scene, particularly under the gray sky, reminded us of the canals back home in the Netherlands. It was a fitting way to say goodbye to the town named after the Dutch Harlingen!

We left just before 11 a.m. and headed to Corpus Christi, TX. Driving through the Texas plains was unexpectedly similar – except for the scattered brush and cacti – to the Dutch polders: scenic, flat, and empty.

And Even A Rotterdam Flashback

Close to Corpus Christi, TX, the scenic landscape changed dramatically into a petrochemical landscape with towering structures and industrial smells. It reminded me of Rotterdam’s Botlek area—not the scenery I wanted or expected! Nevertheless, the room we booked at the Red Roof Inn, near downtown, was comfortable. Since it would be a three-day stay only, I figured I could make the most of our stay here!
