Starkville Charm

Our Little Starkville Retreat

Our cute Airbnb in student city Starkville, MS, was located in the center of the former Cotton District.

Today, the site is a national example of new urbanism. This part of town has a cozy vibe with walkable streets, public spaces, restaurants and bars around the corner, and housing and shopping nearby!

Football Fields ...

We explored another day in Starkville and visited the Mississippi University Campus and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library. The campus is a city within a city with neoclassic brick buildings, a beautiful park, a lake with fountains, and a huge football stadium, a site I frankly did not expect in the poorest state of the USA.

... and The Presidential Library

The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library opened in 2017. I enjoyed learning more about the 18th president of the United States, who fought as a general for Lincoln in command of the Union armies. In 1870, he ratified the 15th Amendment, granting African American men the right to vote.

One Last Walk in The Cotton District

We were up early this morning for a final chilly stroll through the Cotton District before packing and driving on. Once a significant cotton mill site with shops and humble workers’ cottages, the district is now a vibrant center. Today, the restored cotton mill serves as a conference center, while students and faculty live in the quaint houses.

After packing, cleaning up, thanking, and saying goodbye to our cute apartment, we left around 11 am. to drive to our new destination.
